An increasing number of businesses aim to demonstrate that they do more than just make a profit. They aim to contribute to a fair and sustainable economy in a way that is both measurable and credible. Today, over 10,000 companies worldwide are certified as B Corps. That recognition comes with responsibility: as a B Corp, you’re expected to show how your business creates impact, and how it keeps improving. By combining your certification with a VSME sustainability report, you take this even further. VSME provides a clear, professional, and EU-aligned format for reporting and communicating your impact, both internally and externally.
B Corp is the leading international certification for companies that balance profit with positive impact. It takes a holistic look at your business, from carbon emissions and working conditions to transparency and diversity.
It’s not a simple checklist. Certification is based on a thorough assessment via the B Impact Assessment (BIA), which is renewed every three years. In addition, you’re expected to publicly report your progress every year through an annual Impact Report.
B Corp is for companies that are genuinely committed to doing business sustainably. It shows that you’re thinking long-term. As a B Corp, you become part of a global community of like-minded companies, involve your team in your mission, attract purpose-driven talent, and position your business as a trusted partner for customers, investors, and suppliers.
The Voluntary Sustainability Reporting Standard for SMEs (VSME) was developed by EFRAG, on behalf of the European Commission, specifically for small and medium-sized enterprises. It offers a voluntary, EU-aligned framework to report on sustainability in a clear, consistent way. One that’s recognised across all EU member states.
VSME is designed to help SMEs communicate with key stakeholders such as large clients, banks, investors and governments. Think of it as a ‘CSRD-light’, a more straightforward, more accessible way to report sustainability for SMEs, while also contributing to supply chain transparency.
As a B Corp, you already collect a lot of impact data. That data can be easily reused in a VSME report, making your efforts visible in the supply chain, in a recognised format that’s understood across Europe.
Your VSME report can also include your B Corp certification (and other labels or accreditations) automatically.
In addition to the three-year recertification, B Lab expects all B Corps to publish an annual Impact Report. This covers your progress, goals and performance across the seven new core impact areas.
Why does this matter?
• It shows you take responsibility
• It keeps stakeholders informed and engaged
• It builds trust with clients, suppliers and investors
A VSME report is ideal to use as your annual Impact Report, or as a structured, EU-aligned addition to your existing reporting.
Becoming a B Corp is a meaningful step, and a serious one. By combining your certification with a VSME report, you create a complete, credible and shareable impact story that meets both B Lab expectations and EU sustainability standards.
