What is the VSME Standard?

The VSME Standard is the new European standard for sustainability reporting.

It is specifically designed for SMEs, smaller businesses that don't have to comply with the CSRD but still want to take sustainability and transparency seriously.

The standard helps you measure your sustainability performance in a simple and practical way.

You gain insight into your results, so you can work on improvements and easily report on them. For example, to customers, investors, or other stakeholders.

How does the VSME reporting tool work?

With the VSME reporting tool, you fill out a questionnaire that maps your sustainability performance. Once completed, a sustainability report is automatically generated, fully aligned with the VSME standard. This report can be instantly exported and shared with customers, partners, and other stakeholders, providing transparency on your sustainability efforts.

Is the VSME right for your business?

What’s the difference between the CSRD and VSME?

The CSRD is mandatory legislation for larger companies in the EU (with more than 1000 employees).

The VSME Standard is voluntary, easier, more affordable, and specifically tailored to smaller businesses. The goal is the same: transparency about sustainability, but in a way that fits the needs of SMEs.

What exactly do you measure with the VSME?

You measure your impact on CO2 emissions, energy usage, working conditions, ethical business practices, and more.

You gain a broad yet clear overview of your ESG performance (Environmental, Social, Governance).

How reliable is the VSME Standard?

The VSME Standard was developed by EFRAG on behalf of the European Commission.

It is an official standard recognised across all EU member states. The content aligns with the CSRD and other existing legislation, but is easier and more applicable for SMEs.

How does the VSME align with existing laws and regulations?

The VSME Standard is aligned with the CSRD and European sustainability guidelines.

It covers the same themes and principles, but in a simpler format. This way, you meet the expectations of customers, banks, and supply chain partners who must comply with the CSRD.

Do I need to have my data verified?

No, external verification is not required. That’s precisely what makes the VSME Standard so accessible for SMEs. Of course, you can have your report independently verified if needed. For example, if a customer requires this.

Does the VSME help me meet all requirements?

With the VSME, you demonstrate that you report according to a European standard.

This ensures that you meet many of the requirements set by customers, banks, and supply chain partners. It is (still) not a legal obligation, but a strong proof of your commitment and transparency.

With the VSME, you measure sustainability performance, but this does not automatically mean you are sustainable. It simply maps out where you stand in terms of sustainability.
