Biodiversity Day 2026

On 22 May 2026, the world marks the International Day for Biological Diversity. A day dedicated to raising awareness about the richness of life on Earth and the increasing pressure on biodiversity. Not only nature organisations, but also more and more entrepreneurs and companies are getting involved. And that is essential.

Biodiversity is not an abstract concept. It directly affects our food systems, health, economy and living environment.

When is the International Day for Biological Diversity?

The International Day for Biological Diversity takes place every year on 22 May. It was established by the United Nations and is also known as World Biodiversity Day.

In the Netherlands, this day falls within the Week of Biodiversity, which in 2026 runs from Friday 15 May to Monday 25 May. During this week, hundreds of activities are organised, including excursions, lectures, bioblitzes, open gardens, workshops and nature films.

Why is this day celebrated?

The purpose of Biodiversity Day is to draw annual attention to the importance of biodiversity, as the diversity of life on Earth continues to decline.

Key causes include:

  • Changes in land use
  • Climate change
  • Pollution
  • Overuse of natural resources

In 1992, the Convention on Biological Diversity was signed during the UN Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro. The convention focuses on:

  1. Conserving biodiversity
  2. Using biodiversity sustainably
  3. Sharing benefits from natural resources fairly

The International Day for Biological Diversity reminds us that these goals remain highly relevant.

What is biodiversity?

Biodiversity refers to the variety of life on Earth. It consists of three main types, which together form the foundation of healthy ecosystems.

The 3 types of biodiversity

  1. Genetic diversity
Variation within species, such as different crop varieties or genetic differences within animal populations.
  2. Species diversity
The number of different plant and animal species in an area.
  3. Ecosystem diversity
The variety of ecosystems, such as forests, wetlands, grasslands and urban nature.

Together, these forms ensure balance and resilience.

From awareness to action

Biodiversity Day is a starting point, not a conclusion. Awareness matters, but real impact comes from action.

This can include:

  • Understanding environmental impact
  • Integrating biodiversity into strategy
  • Transparent reporting
  • Targeted improvement actions

Eevery makes this simple and accessible, so you can focus on improvement.

Working together for biodiversity

Biodiversity is extraordinary. It inspires, supports life and enables our economy. Most importantly, biodiversity is essential. Use Biodiversity Day 2026 as a moment to reflect and act.
