Lead the Change: How Drukkerij de Bij builds a sustainable future with quality and people

The graphic industry is changing rapidly. Digital tools have made much standard print unnecessary. Small print shops are closing, training programmes are disappearing, and true craftsmanship is becoming rare. At the same time, customers expect more: standout print, exceptional quality, and responsible production. Yet Drukkerij de Bij in Amsterdam stands strong. This family-owned business is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, and according to owner Norbert van Schie, that’s no coincidence. By consistently prioritising sustainability, quality, and people, De Bij has stayed agile in a shifting market.

From a lighting change to a new direction

The turning point began quietly. In 2008, the workshop needed new lighting. LED was an upcoming technology, but Norbert went a step further and chose a 5D mirror reflection system, combining efficient lamps with advanced reflectors.

That decision changed everything. Energy use dropped by 40% and, for the first time, real energy use became visible.

“Once you’re aware, saving is just logical. Many people think sustainability always costs more,” says Norbert.

From there, more sustainable steps followed: solar panels on the roof, safer cleaning products, more efficient machines and reduced chemical use. What started as a single wise investment evolved into a mindset and is now an integral part of De Bij’s identity.

The power of small steps

Becoming more sustainable does not require a big revolution. Norbert has learned that change only works if people can follow.

“Change only works if your team can keep up. That’s why we take it step by step,” he explains.

New lamps, cleaner detergents, machines that require less maintenance, and smart use of scrap paper; each small move adds up. Sustainability is no longer a separate project but part of everyday work.

Quality is the foundation

For De Bij, quality is the foundation of sustainable print.

“If a product is not good, it is not sustainable,” says Norbert. “You avoid waste by making something that lasts.”

The company focuses on work where craft and experience matter. Special books, packaging and print that is more than just ink on paper. Customers receive advice on materials, sourcing and finishing, so the final product is both fit for purpose and responsibly made.

Sustainability is about people too

Norbert once explored what sustainability really means and came to a simple answer: it is about lasting value, not quick wins.It is about shaping a business built to last.

That means happy customers, engaged employees and fair relationships with suppliers. “If you want to build a lasting business, you must invest in your people too,” he says.

At De Bij, staff have flexible schedules, knowledge is preserved and long-term sick employees are supported. Retired colleagues stay connected and help during busy times. This human approach makes the business resilient, even in the face of labour shortages and constant change.

Beyond the front door

De Bij also looks beyond its own doors. Together with local entrepreneurs, the company has helped make the area greener. Rainwater is collected, paving has been reduced and more plants have been added.

“These are simple things that really improve the environment. Do not overcomplicate, look at what is possible,” says Norbert.

Their commitment to sustainability shows in their production and their local community.

The step to B Corp

The drive to make sustainability structural led to B Corp certification, an international standard for social and environmental impact.

“B Corp gave us a clear framework. It was more intensive than expected, but it sharpens choices and opens doors,” says Norbert.

The process brought structure and helped turn decisions into concrete action. De Bij now shares its knowledge through an online hub, helping other businesses choose better materials too.

Patience pays off

Sustainable entrepreneurship takes time. Investments in solar power or safer processes do not pay back overnight. But the results are clear: lower energy costs, smoother operations, engaged people and a company ready for the future.

“Sustainability is everything with a long lifespan: products, relationships, your business. It can feel a bit scary in the short term, but in the long term you become stronger, also financially,” says Norbert.

A message to entrepreneurs

Norbert’s advice is practical: do not wait, just start.

“There is always a reason not to act. But sustainable investments are never wrong. Start small, where it does not hurt, and keep going.”

Just like Drukkerij de Bij turned small steps into lasting change, you can make sustainability part of your business too. Measure your impact, find clear improvements and grow stronger for the future.
